Dental Equity

In many parts of the United States, dental care is still a privilege, not a basic need. Millions of people don’t have access to a dentist, either because they can’t afford it or they live in areas where care is hard to reach. According to CareQuest, around 72 million adults in the U.S. have no dental insurance. People with lower incomes, less education, or from racial minorities are often hit the hardest. This leads to pain, infections, and embarrassment. It also makes people feel left out especially when they feel like they have to hide their smiles. 

I’ve seen this with my own eyes while volunteering at Mission Dental Clinic in Arlington. People from all backgrounds such as Black, Latino, White, and more who stood in line just for a chance at free dental care. I watched many of them come in feeling insecure, avoiding eye contact, or hiding their mouths. But after getting treated, they left smiling, happy, and confident. All because they got care that they couldn’t afford anywhere else. That moment made me realize something simple but powerful: dental care can change lives. 

That’s why I started “Smiles for Change”. I wanted to do something real to help people feel like they matter, even if I could only start with a small kit or one visit. It’s not about being big. It’s about being kind. Through my own time and money, I give out hygiene kits and raise awareness. I’ve partnered with places like schools, shelters, and clinics and recently began working with “Acme Outreach” to grow the impact. Every person deserves to smile, and nobody should feel less than because of their teeth. 

This is what dental equity is really about. It’s not just about fixing teeth it’s about bringing peace, confidence, and kindness into someone’s life. If more people had access to care, we’d see a world with more smiles, more joy, and more understanding. We’re all human, and a peaceful world starts with seeing and supporting each other. That’s what I’m working for one kit, one person, and one smile at a time.
